Better Together in 2024
In our 56th year, we are committed more than every to the idea that we are "Better Together," a concept that captures how collaboration, community, and shared experiences enhance our collective journey. At FCS, we believe that individuals and groups thrive more effectively when they work together, support one another, and build meaningful relationships. This year, we celebrate the power of unity and how our combined strengths lead to greater success and fulfillment for each student.
Our graduates often reflect on their sense of belonging and the supportive community at FCS as their most lasting takeaways. Unlike typical valedictorian speeches that focus solely on academic competition, our students celebrate the care of their teachers, the opportunities they’ve embraced, and the relationships they’ve built. On graduation day, we frequently hear from grateful parents who recognize the profound value of an FCS education.
Our recent Friendzy assessment, part of our K-12 social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum, reveals that FCS students feel deeply supported by their teachers. They recognize the value of being "Better Together" with educators dedicated to their growth and well-being.
At FCS, we emphasize the importance of mutual encouragement and love and are committed to seeing each student thrive in an environment where staff and teachers genuinely invest in their success. By celebrating achievements, supporting through challenges, and fostering a culture of unity, we help students carry these values into all areas of their lives. Our goal is to embody the love of Jesus every day, reinforcing that we are truly “Better Together.”
We’re honored that you’ve chosen to have your child join us for the 2024–2025 school year as a Fremont Christian Warrior. Thank you for your partnership in providing an education that helps your child understand their place in God’s plan and their potential to make a positive impact in the world.
S.T.E.A.M. Showcase 2022
On Friday, March 18, elementary parents were invited to our annual S.T.E.A.M. Showcase, which was facilitated virtually this year, with teachers providing classroom tours and their S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) projects via the web. Each grade level learned about the engineering design process, which includes the following steps: ask, imagine, plan, create, test, and improve. Using the curriculum from Engineering is Elementary, a curriculum developed by the Museum of Science in Boston, students solved real-world problems connected to stories of students around the world.
Transitional Kindergarten
Our transitional kindergartners designed a house for various environments, utilizing the names and characteristics of shapes they had learned together in class. They first planned their house using a variety of materials such as blocks, rubber bands, Unifix Cubes, and Legos, then created structures for the environment of their choice, such as the beach or mountains. The structures were tested for strength and whether they provided shelter from the environment of that region.
Kindergarten
The concept of habits was the focus for our kindergartners, whose engineering project included creating animals with UV-light-sensitive beads, then creating habitats for their critters. The test portion of the project saw the students bringing their habitats outside mid-day to see if the UV beads changed colors. If not, their animal was in a safe environment!
Grade 1
First graders explored insects and plants and applied agricultural engineering to solve a pollination problem. The unit begins with the storybook Mariana Becomes a Butterfly, in which a girl living in the Dominican Republic explores the field of agricultural engineering to determine why her ohelo plant won’t make berries. Over the course of the unit, students learned about agricultural pest management, the life cycles of plants, and the interdependence of insect pollinators and plants. Like Mariana, students then followed the steps of the engineering design process to imagine, plan, create, and improve their own hand pollinators.
Grade 2
Students in second grade learned how engineers use their knowledge of energy transfer to design solutions for using energy without harming the environment. The unit begins with the storybook Lerato Cooks Up a Plan, in which a girl in Botswana uses her knowledge of green engineering to build a solar oven to cook food for her family. Students explore the life cycles and environmental impact of products, then collect and analyze data to compare how different materials perform as thermal insulators and conductors.
Grade 3
In third grade, students explored magnetism and its applications in engineering. The unit begins with the storybook Hikaru’s Toy Troubles, in which a boy in Japan applies his knowledge of transportation engineering to design a special attraction for his family’s struggling toy store. Over the course of the unit, students analyze the design of transportation systems, investigate the properties of magnets, and build model toys that use magnets.
Grade 4
Fourth graders explored electricity and its use in everyday technologies. The unit begins with the storybook A Reminder for Emily, in which a girl living on a ranch in Australia learns about electrical engineering to build a system that alerts her when she needs to fill the sheep’s water trough. Over the course of the unit, students explore energy and electricity, investigate closed and open circuits, and create diagrams of circuits.
Grade 5
Students in fifth grade explored organisms and recognized how engineering can help provide for the needs of a small animal. The unit begins with the storybook Juan Daniel’s Fútbol Frog, in which a boy in El Salvador uses bioengineering to design a safe environment for his fútbol (soccer) team’s mascot, a small frog. Over the course of the unit, students explored the concepts of biomimicry, conservation, and biotechnology, and tested how quickly or slowly water passes through different materials.

FCS Fine Arts: Choirs & Musicale 2018
Last week, the high school choirs traveled to Pasadena for the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Senior High Musicale in Southern California. Joining with other high school choirs from California, the students participated in a two-day festival which finishes in a concert featuring all of the 600+ students singing together.
From the official ACSI website:
"ACSI Musicale is a two-day choir festival that culminates in a public Command Performance and Sacred Concert in which all choirs are combined. Each choir, regardless of size, must memorize the six (6) combined songs chosen by the guest conductor. Each choir will also be adjudicated by the guest conductor on two (2) of their own selections. Musicale also features adjudications for chamber choirs, large ensembles, small ensembles, sacred classical solos, and gospel solos.
This is not a competition. Choirs, ensembles, and soloists are adjudicated by the guest conductor or guest adjudicators, and received oral and written evaluative comments."
This year, both our Concert Choir and Living Water Ensemble each earned a Command Performance. A couple of our students also earned solo Command Performance — congratulations to Keren G. and Madison G.! One student noted that judges were brought to tears due to an excellent performance from FCS.
A big congratulations to Mr. Guzman, Ms. Sondra, and every student. We've seen the hard work that each person puts in to make this run smoothly.
Campus Garden, Part III: J-Term
Original writeup provided by Terry Gregory, edited and published by Emily Bean. This is the third part in our series featuring the campus garden at Fremont Christian School.
January Term, or J-Term, is a specialized two-week session between the first and second semesters of high school. Students take a morning and an afternoon class on subjects that offer an opportunity to explore beyond the typical college-prep curriculum.
From Mr. Gregory:
Part of the garden design concept involved my J-term class.
It is called "Bringing Back the Natives." A healthy garden needs a lot of natural pollinators (bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds), so we removed sections of existing ornamental plants and shrubs that surrounded the Y-Building to allow for planting native California plants that naturally attract the needed pollinators.
My J-Term students helped to design the new areas and installed the drip irrigation system in January 2015. In both January 2016 and 2017, we continued to plant natives at the Y-Building and at the end of the second-grade portable classrooms. I am happy to report that the pollinators have faithfully returned to our school garden site, as we saw many of them this fall.
My next J-Term class (2018) will continue this project, but we have also begun to focus on using the greenhouse for seed-starting and raising our own native plants and vegetables with the hope that we will one day become self-sufficient and supply our own mini nursery on campus, rather than purchase our plants from garden centers.
J-Term will begin once we're back from Christmas break!
Campus Garden, Part II: Course Integration
Original write up provided by Terry Gregory, edited and published by Emily Bean. This is the second part of a series featuring the campus garden at Fremont Christian School.
Once the garden beds were completed and the automatic irrigation was installed and running, it was time for the students to participate in April 2015. The grade 5 class was first involved with some basic pilot projects, such as planting and harvesting potatoes. Students were allowed to take home the food and share with their families. These students got exposure to nutrition-based activities in both the garden and their classrooms.
The campus garden got even more use in Summer 2017 with the FCS Summer Enrichment Program – Adventure in the Great Outdoors. Summer program students had opportunities to plant seeds, raise starter plants, and upkeep a variety of vegetables. These students also began a garden journal.
A grade 7 Garden Science class was added in to the junior high 2017-2018 elective wheel. Students have been engaged and very receptive to the hands-on learning opportunities in the vegetable garden. Garden Science students will continue into the fall and winter with projects on native plants. It’s been a blessing to see our children enjoy, learn, and care for a part of God’s natural order. We’re also excited to see where we can go with this garden as part of teaching methods.
Campus Garden, Part I: The Beginnings
Original write-up provided by Terry Gregory, edited and published by Emily Bean. This is the first part of a series featuring the campus garden at Fremont Christian School.
The idea for the campus garden originally came from one of our preschool parents in September 2014. They mentioned their idea to the Head of School, Dr. Tricia Meyer. From there, a small garden committee was built, and one of the leaders is Mr. Gregory. He was highly involved with the garden planning, taking workshops from UC Santa Cruz in preparation and campaigning for different projects in order for the campus garden to get started.
The garden committee determined that FCS would have to undertake a large project of reclaiming sections of campus to allow for a garden. There weren’t any plots of land readily available within the current space. The Facilities Department assisted with the plotting and pinpointed an area where land could be used. They devised a three-phase plan in reclaiming land around the Y-Building, and then Facilities staff later assisted with selecting materials for sectioning off the garden and the irrigation system.
Several people outside of the school were used in this planning phase of the garden. A landscape architect agreed that raised bed planters would be a good way to go, in both design and practical use. Another consultant was suggested to FCS, who has extensive experience with planter box construction. This consulted was part of the team for building the garden. As Mr. Gregory wrapped up with each consultant and departments, the complete garden budget was created and the garden construction began! They worked to build on weekends throughout fall and winter 2014.
Solar Eclipse Viewing 2017
Solar Eclipse Viewing: Monday, Aug. 21, 2017 at FCS
Weather permitting, we will have a school-wide solar eclipse viewing on the softball field Monday morning, August 21. Elementary students (grades 2-5) will view the first part of the eclipse.
Registered parent volunteers should check with their child's teacher ahead of time if they want to participate. You must be a fingerprinted and registered volunteer with FCS for the 2017-18 school year.
Numerous FCS and Harbor Light administrative staff will be present on the field to help oversee the event. For safety reasons, we are exclusively using indirect observation methods. Students should not bring solar glasses to school because of the widespread number of fake glasses that have been reported in the news.
Elementary and junior high students will make pinhole projectors to observe the eclipse. Additional projectors will be provided for use by secondary students. There will also be a telescope viewing station by Dr. Handran. Keep in mind that there will be a waiting time for telescope viewing and students will need to move through the station quickly in order to let other students observe. The telescope station also uses an indirect viewing method.
IMPORTANT: NEVER VIEW THE SUN DIRECTLY AS THIS CAN RESULT IN PERMANENT EYE DAMAGE.
Younger students will need more frequent reminders than older students. We are looking forward to a safe, fun, and memorable eclipse experience for everyone!

World Wide Warrior Week 2016 - Potluck
The FCS High School World Wide Warrior Week featured the Taste Around the World potluck — and it was delicious. Parents and staff helped provide food samples from different cultures for our students to experience. It is one of our memorable and delicious events! Be sure to get involved next year so you don't miss out.
Huge thank you to our teachers, students, and families for helping get everything arranged!
International Winter Camp 2016
FCS hosted our first-ever International Winter Camp this January, arranged by our own Mrs. Yeung. There were three groups of students from China who attended, ranging from high school, junior high, and elementary grades, visiting from January 23rd - 27th.
We had two groups visit the campus over the weekend for special class sessions with Mr. Ko and Mr. Handran and fun activities coordinated by Mrs. Fraass and Ms. Bean. Quite a few of our own high school students came out to welcome our visitors! During the week, all three grade groups joined in on regular class schedules, getting the full Fremont Christian School experience.
From Tom Bean, Director of Admissions: "Our first International Winter Camp was a wonderful event. We had 75 students from China over the weekend and in classrooms this week and they were very positive about their time with us."
Operation Christmas Child 2015
This year's Operation Christmas Child (OCC) was a success, thanks to the support from FCS families! We had lots of boxes filled up and sent out from our school. Our OCC chapel service encouraged our students, where they heard the heartfelt stories of children in need who received these shoeboxes from Samaritan's Purse for Christmas.
It was a blessing to us to hear back from our own students and see how these stories touched them. Thank you for your continued support, parents! We look forward to working together next year's Operation Christmas Child with you and your children.
FCS Preschool & TreeRing Plant 177 Trees
Preschool parents:
Thank you for your support of the preschool yearbook!
Our yearbook vendor, TreeRing, has partnered with Trees for the Future to plant a tree for every yearbook purchase.
TreeRing’s environmental roots go deeper than our name. We kinda like this planet, so we’ve partnered with Trees for the Future to plant a tree for every yearbook purchased. In addition, we print on recycled paper and only produce the exact number of books parents buy, eliminating unnecessary waste and resources.
Not only can our school partners feel good about providing students and parents with a yearbook that captures their personal memories, they can also have confidence in the sustainable and environmentally conscious approach we take in producing them.
It’s the least we can all do for the next generation.
We purchased 177 yearbooks this year, so 177 trees will be planted. Thanks to you, we are planting seeds toward a better future for our children.
First Annual Luau 2014
Thank you, FCS families, friends, and staff! Without your support, the luau would not have happened.
Our first annual luau was a great success! We hope that you enjoyed the food, music, dance, and the raffle as much as we did, especially for the lucky winner who won an iPad mini! What a great evening of sharing food and fun together.
Looking forward to seeing you at the luau again next year.
